Crystals and Stones

As a very young child, I began keeping boxes of collected rocks beneath my bed. I'm sure, at the time, I had no idea of the power stored within these creations, or the magick they could wield. I just loved the rocks...the look of them, the feel of them in my hands, and even the smell of them.

I believe that most children are drawn instinctively to those things in nature that contain ancient magicks, ancient powers, and strengths. And I believe that they hold within their subconscious this esoteric knowledge, indefinable, ethereal as it is, until one day-- someone tells them not to.  Fortunately, for so many, once we've grown, we rediscover this lost knowledge. And I believe, if you're here, you are drawn to crystals and stones just as instinctively as am I.

Upon this page you will find my personal information for charging, cleansing, and using various crystals and stones for magickal workings. By scrolling further below, you will also find correspondences for these magickal objects that will help you receive the most benefit from their magickal use.

How do you choose your own crystals and stones?

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules for this. It has to do with the type of stone you need for the intended purpose, of course. But it also has to do with the depth of color, the shape, patterns that may be found upon it, and most importantly of all-- the 'feel'.

I don't believe anyone can choose a stone for someone else, not even in a piece of jewelry. You have to choose it yourself, or rather, it chooses you. And yes, I do believe there is a great deal of truth to that statement. I've been looking over stones in a shop before, and I've had one catch my eye. Even though I continue sorting through a whole handful of the same type of stone, that particular one will keep drawing my attention back to it.

Don't be afraid to dive in, hold the stones in your hands, rub them between your fingers, turn them over in your palm and really look at them, listen to them, feel them-- feel them beyond just their physical presence, pay attention to the energy they are emitting.

Take your time, don't let anyone rush you, and don't let anyone talk you into purchasing a stone you don't feel drawn to. You also want to make sure that the dealer you're buying them from is offering the stones at a fair price. Some merchants tend to get a little slap happy when tacking a value on their wares. Stop at more than one shop and compare prices-- this also applies if you are purchasing your stones off the internet.

How do you cleanse your crystals and stones?

Now you've purchased your lovely handful of gemstones and taken them home with you-- It's time to cleanse them, to wash away all the accumulated energy they've picked up sitting around the shop, being handled by merchants and customers, passed from hand to hand.

The easiest way, and the way I prefer myself, is to hold them under running water. There is nothing more absolutely cleansing, clarifying, and rejuvenating than the magick of water. Period. I 'know' my stones and crystals are truly cleansed after doing this; I can feel the difference. If you feel a heaviness to any of your stones--as in energy, or they have been used for some particularly heavy duty rituals or healing, this is the best method and the most complete method of cleansing.

Another way to cleanse your stones, and a way I've used myself when I'm in a rush, is to hold them in incense smoke. This is fast, easy, and it does the trick for light cleansing. Though I still advise, if your stones are particularly heavy with negative energy, use the first method.

You can also leave them lay in moonlight overnight, or you can fill a bowl with salt and cover them for a period of time determined by you, till they feel 'clean'. You can even immerse them in a bowl of water to which a pinch of salt has been added-- but be cautious about this method if your stones are polished and finished, because the salt water will ruin the finish on your shiny stone.

Using Crystals in the Home

Choosing Stones & Crystals for Your Home

In this list you'll notice that instead of giving you a specific list of crystals and stones by name, I'm giving you colors that are associated with these spaces, and you can choose which stones you connect with in this way.  I don't know about you, but I find a lot of people are so overwhelmed with the geology of it all that they lose the magick.  I work in a shop that displays and sells a vast amount of crystals and stones every day, and I've watched individuals so centered on wanting to get a stone's name correct, wanting to be sure that they don't make a mistake, wanting to be assured that every energetic vibration of that particular stone with that particular name is exactly associated with what they're looking for that the process of choosing a stone seems like a stressful situation for them.

This is all just a bit too analytical for me.  And I don't believe that this is the correct way for any individual to choose a stone or crystal for their personal use.

For example, blue lace agate is known for it's calming effects, but if you hate this color connecting with this stone is not going to leave you feeling calm.  Every time you look at your blue lace agate, which you purchased to help you reduce stress and feel calm, your first thought will be, "I hate this color."  Stones of bright and brilliant colors and sheens are usually not noted for having a calming effect, but what if your favorite color is red, what if you love garnets?  What if garnets make you feel happy and peaceful and stress-free?  Choose the garnet.

With that said, here are the various areas and spaces you'll find in most homes along with the colors and energies usually associated with each one.  Don't be bound by these suggestions if other colors connect with you and the energy of a particular area.  Find the crystals and stones you feel would enhance these spaces for you.

  • 1. The Bathroom...This room is associated with the element of Water and with the colors blue & black. It is connected with the ultimate basics of life. You can combine crystals with personal cleansing routines, to stimulate your body's Chi energy and connect with your dreams, goals, hopes, and fears.

  • 2.  The Bedroom...This room is associated with the element of Earth and with the colors yellow and pink. It's energy lays with friends, lovers, the pleasures and pain of social connections, falling in love, and sex. You can use crystals in this room that will help you with sleep, courtship, sexual stamina, romance, partnerships, and friendships.

  • 3.  The Kitchen...The Kitchen is associated with the element of Wood and the color green.  This is the core of the home, the very heart of the family.  Crystals used in this area will strengthen bonds of togetherness as well as bond you to your own ancestry.

  • 4.  The Home Office...The home office is associated with the element of Wood and with the colors green and red, as well as brown and reddish purple.  You will use crystals in this area to bring you financial success and good luck in business.

  • 5.  The Home Sanctuary...This room is associated with the element Earth and with the color yellow.  This room is associated with balance and well-being.  And this room is just what it's name implies-- a sanctuary.  Here is where you'll use crystals to enhance your spiritual life and your emotional/physical/and mental growth.

  • 6.  Hallway & Foyer...The hallway and foyer are associated with the element of Metal and with the color silver, which can range from shades of white to milky grays.  Crystals used in this area of your home will foster relationships with people near you, people who will prove to be helpful to you; they will also help you deal with the energy of change and with the disruption of travel.

  • 7.  Children's Rooms...Children's rooms are also associated with Metal and with the color silver.  These rooms represent beginnings and creativity.  You will use crystals in these areas to help you in the area of inventiveness and to plan future endeavors.

  • 8.  The Study...This room is associated with the element of Earth and with the colors yellow, blue-green, and turquoise.  This room represent learning and intellect, as well as introspection.  Crystals will be used in this area to inspire you to find your potential, as well as to hunger for and acquire knowledge.

  • 9.  The Living/Dining Room...This area of the home is associated with the element of Fire and with the color red.  This space deals with self-perception, your reputation, as well as the way others perceive you.  Crystals used in this area will be focused on public appearance, your reputation in the world, as well as your responsibilities in the face of community.

I hope this is enough information to get you started on improving the energies in your living space and thus in your life.  Our home is filled with rocks, stones, piles of rocks, little rocks, bowls of rocks, big rocks.  Rocks and crystals are usually part of the children's Yule list-- at their request.  And it isn't a real birthday at our house if the guest of honor doesn't receive a magickal stone.

It should be noted that the eastern tradition of elements are slightly different than that of the western tradition, which is what I normally adhere to in my spiritual practices.  The western tradition includes Earth, Air, Fire, & Water; where as the eastern tradition includes  Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Metal, & Wood.

A Crystal Grid ~
Healing & Prosperity

The photos for this section ~ My Kitchen Table!

To begin the new year, I felt that a crystal grid to promote energy for good health and prosperity was in order. I sat this grid up on the kitchen table, along with four tea candles, and we wallowed in new-age health and prosperity energy till we were up to our eyeballs in it. If you’d like to follow suit and bring this energy into your space, into your life, and into manifestation, here’s what I used and how I did it:

My center stone is a large selenite crystal used as the energy generator, or battery, for this grid. Selenite is the one crystal that supposedly never needs to be cleansed. It’s energy is pure and constantly moving- this is a high vibrational stone; this makes selenite the perfect battery for any of the crystal grids you decide to create.

Selenite:

Planet/Moon
Zodiac sign/Gemini
Chakra/third eye
Energy/receptive or feminine
Element/Water.

Magickally speaking: selenite induces clarity of thought and perception, it ignites a higher consciousness that allows access to energies found on other planes. This crystal also anchors the lighter ethereal side of our being to the slower heavier vibration of earth, of matter. Selenite is a powerful crystal and can be used for scrying the past, present, future. Selenite stabilizes erratic emotional energy and connects the conscious part of our mind to the sub-conscious, allowing for clear thoughts and unexpected revelations. This beautiful crystal is also an excellent provider of protection, bringing peace and security into your home.

The stones situated evenly around the selenite crystal, the inner ring, include eight stones: four blue lace agates, two aventurines, and two bloodstone.

  • Blue Lace Agate:

Planet/Mercury
Zodiac sign/Gemini
Chakra/third eye
Energy/receptive or feminine
Element/Water.

Magickally speaking: This is a serene stone conducive to relaxation and de-stressing. Blue lace agate promotes a peaceful atmosphere within a space and among individuals who inhabit this space. This is the primary stone I use for healing the body, mind, and spirit. Holistically speaking: The blue agate stabilizes the aura, transforms negative energy, and is conducive to healing any problems with the digestive system, including the stomach; the eyes, uterus, lymphatic system, pancreas, and skin.

  • Aventurine:

Planet/Mercury
Zodiac sign/Aries
Chakra/heart
Energy/projective or masculine
Element/Air.

Magically speaking: aventurine is used to manifest spells of prosperity and is used as a lucky talisman by gamblers. It is considered an all around good luck stone. Holistically speaking: green aventurine is used to treat malignant maladies; disorders of the heart; blood-pressure; cholesterol; metabolism; allergies; migraines and eye strain; sinus infections; and issues with the lungs and urogenital systems. Aventurine enhances intelligence and increases creativity. It’s a very calming stone and also lends itself to promoting peace and releasing stress.

  • Bloodstone:

Planet/Mars
Zodiac sign/Aries, Libra, Pisces
Chakra/heart, cleanses & realigns the lower chakras
Energy/projective or masculine
Element/Fire.

Magickally speaking: In ancient Babylon this stone was believed to have the power to overthrow enemies. Bloodstone is used in magickal spells for legal, business, and financial matters; for invisibility spells; and for spells promoting personal protection, including issues of banishing negative influences and healing any wounds in the ancestral line. Holistically speaking: The most potent thing bloodstone is used for is to halt bleeding; issues with the blood and the circulatory system; miscarriages; health issues with the liver, intestines, kidney, and spleen; infections; and fevers. Bloodstone is considered a general health enhancing talisman.

The outside ring of crystals is made up entirely of clear quartz crystal points. Five of these were rough unfinished crystals, and three of them were very small polished quartz crystal points. The purpose of these crystal points is to keep the energy moving, to raise the power level of your grid, basically- to keep the magick flowing smoothly in a positive direction. They are placed with the points all headed in the same direction, and in a direction that suggests a clockwise movement.

  • Clear Quartz Crystal:

Planet/Moon & Sun
Zodiac sign/All of them
Chakra/harmonizes all the chakras & aligns the aura
Energy/projective & receptive, or both masculine & feminine
Element/Fire & Water.

Magickally speaking: clear quartz crystal is used in spells to enhance power; for weather magic- to bring rain; it’s used in the creation of magic wands for shamans, esteemed in the Native American traditions for its power; and is connected to the Goddess and full moon rituals by some Wiccan traditions. It is symbolic of spirit and the divine, and it is a wildly popular new-age stone. Holistically speaking: Clear quartz crystal is considered a tremendously powerful energy generator; it’s believed to generate electromagnetism and to dispel static electricity; it regulates energy; heals karmic wounds; and is considered a master healer that covers almost any condition.

I used a medium-sized polished clear quartz crystal to activate this crystal grid.
