August 1st ~ Lammas!

We’re gearing up for the first Pagan harvest festival of the year: Lammas (also known as Lughnasadh in some traditions). How time flies; it’s this time of year again. Summer may still feel in full-swing in your area, but Mother Nature is tapping us on the shoulder with this first harvest of grain, reminding us that it’s not going to last forever, giving us a heads-up to be prepared for the inevitable winter-to-come. Following is more information on this holiday in our Pagan “Wheel-of-the-Year”, including the Goddess connection, my personal reflections on this harvest festival, as well as correspondences for Lammas, ritual suggestions, and recipes!

Read on, enjoy.

And…Happy Lammas!

Lammas
(August 1)

As the matron of ancient times would start early to prepare her family for the harsh winter months ahead, so the Mother Goddess prepares us. She reminds us of the bounty yet to come with an early harvest of grain. She encourages us to take stock of what we have, and this pertains to the physical harvests, of course, but it can also include taking stock of ourselves, re-evaluating our goals, our lives, our paths, our relationships, our strengths, and our weaknesses.

This is the first of the harvest festivals, and in the ancient world this was indeed a time of celebration. A successful harvest would mean survival in the harsh winter months. In the northern countries this was, in particular, a celebration of the first harvest of wheat, thus bread is featured in the celebration of Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh.

As the modern day Pagans celebrate this festival they will build roaring bonfires, feed each other a mouthful of bread, and with wine they will toast each other…”May you eat the bread of life.“

My Celebration:

Yes, it’s a harvest festival. Yes, bread and wheat, as well as other grains, figure into it. But for me, it was more about the passage of time. It’s about how time plays tricks on us, and as a child on summer vacation from school, these three months seemed like a whole year rolled up into one magickal moment.

August 1 in South Dakota meant lots of lingering blistering summer days ahead, the heat being almost as intense as July; but it also meant something different in the air, that faint scent (an autumn scent), a nuance of change in the sunlight, the slight tinge starting at the edge of the leaves. And then one morning, being greeted with crisp air and a sky so blue it was almost painful to look at, so beautiful it was.

This holiday, this moment in time, is a mystery. It is the ability to look back into the past while standing on some invisible magickal horizon so that you can see the future, but just enough of the future to tease you forward. And you come to this exact same time and place year after year. August 1, another summer coming to a close, one of so many, and another autumn returning. An end, to make way for something new to begin, again, and again, and again.

The figure standing on the horizon grows, matures, changes, morphs, ages, expands, learns, regrets, loves, hates, wonders, questions, fears, laughs, and listens. The figure on the horizon passes through a human life time in the blink of an eye, with one inaudible breath…and then they fade into an ethereal creature of smokey wisps with a voice that is but the wind.

Lammas Correspondences:

Summer and Books Go Together ~ Green Witchcraft Grimoire

I associate summer with books and long leisurely afternoons of reading.  There's just something about a languid, hot, lazy summer day and curling up with a good book and an iced tea. This summer was especially exciting for me because it heralded the release of my 8th book, Green Witchcraft Grimoire.

If you've been wondering what this book is all about and if it's a book that you should add to your personal library, here are endorsements and reviews that have come in from authors, radio hosts, artists, and pagans extraordinaire to define the magic and explain the benefits of Green Witchcraft Grimoire.

Order your copy here:

  • “Green Witchcraft Grimoire is an excellent starting point for those wishing to learn more about working with the natural world in spellcraft. Raine details not only ingredients and tools but also ways to use those items to achieve a specific objective. Intended to be a book that is referred to time and time again, she leaves plenty of space for writing personal notes. Highly recommended!” ―Deborah J. Martin, Author of Herbs: Medicinal, Magical, Marvelous!, A Green Witch’s Formulary, and other books

  • “Finally, someone gets it! From novice to expert, this wonderful grimoire will demystify the perceived complications of walking your unique path no matter your affinity. Its simple, clear, and soulful use of your spiritual time, with solid information on the foundations of spiritual crafting, is a combination not to be missed. My new go-to for my magical path. Bravo Amythyst Raine.” ―Onyx Moon Blackstone, witch and founder of Something Wytchy

  • “I've practiced witchcraft, in independence and gathering from the many traditions of our multiple ancestors, for more than 30 years. When I began my personal journey into the past to anchor my own search with Earth-based spiritual expressions, my good friend on pages was Scott Cunningham. Amythyst's grimoire has the foundational information and guidance Cunningham brought to our community so long ago. Elementary flow, inspiration to grow! Amythyst gives a witch the basic tools for growth and an awareness that helps to provide the window within where witchcraft waits to be expressed.” ―Gwendolyn H. Barry, blender and owner, Daughters of Isis

  • “From spells to salves, tinctures to teas, rituals to recipes, Amythyst Raine’s Green Witchcraft Grimoire offers initiates a straightforward blueprint for incorporating both organic and celestial magic into modern living. Candle correspondences, kitchen supplies list, solstice celebrations, sun sign manifestation, crystal charging tips, an esbat full moon chart, sigil creation, sacred wood selection―it’s all here. Any novice dedicated to harnessing natural resources for practical witchcraft will find an accessible guide in Green Witchcraft Grimoire.” ―Janet Boyer, author of Back in Time Tarot, Tarot in Reverse, and Naked Tarot

  • “Green Witchcraft Grimoire is a fun and easy-to-navigate collection of spells, rituals, and recipes inspired by global Pagan practices, both ancient and modern. For witches who are drawn to recycling, sustainability, and reverence for Mother Earth, this book makes a great addition to your collection!” ―Raven Digitalis, author of Esoteric Empathy and Shadow Magick Compendium

  • Amythyst Raine has masterfully organized and created an invaluable resource for the ways of Green Witchcraft. With everything a witch could ask for under the Sun, Moon and Stars, this book is filled to the brim with green magic; rites and rituals, blessings and spells, recipes and correspondences. And with lots of space to personalize it, you can take notes of your experiences and write your own spells and formulas. Honoring Your Personal Spiritual Practices

A gentleman once handed me a citrine stone, telling me that it would ground me, calm me down, make the atmosphere feel more settled. I stood in open-mouthed disbelief as he plopped a beautiful polished citrine crystal in the palm of my hand. I wasn’t so surprised at his concern or his kindness, I was more in disbelief over his choice of a stone. For me, citrine is not something that has any of the properties that it was being praised for. I mostly use citrine to enhance my psychic abilities. If I want a stone that’s going to calm me down, I use rose quartz or blue lace agate. If I wanted a stone to ground me, I’d use smokey quart or hematite.

I opened my mouth automatically, ready to correct him, but in a split second, thankfully before any speech left my mouth, I thought better. This man was obviously talking from his own experience, and if he found citrine to be calming and relaxing, who the hell was I to tell him otherwise.

How often have we been told that we’re doing something wrong? How often have we told someone else that they’re doing something wrong?

Whether we’re talking about stones and crystals, magickal oils, spells and rituals, reading the cards, or any other magickal undertaking or creation, it’s just like telling a cook in their own kitchen that they’re cooking “Wrong”. Who has a right to do that? And if we’ve never done something the way another individual does, how do we know that it doesn’t work? Maybe it wouldn’t work for us, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work for them.

Where does this attitude come from in the pagan world? Is it a hold-over from mainstream backgrounds that most of us have, the Judeo-Christian world of rules and regulations, do’s and don'ts?

  • Maybe a lot of us are subconsciously still trying to fit our old religion into the new one, especially those of us who might be fairly new to the pagan path.
  • We need to realize that not all pagans are alike, and all the correspondences we read and absorb from the multitude of pagan authors out there are not written in stone. You have to find what works for YOU, whether it works for someone else or not.
  • Stop ignoring your own instincts and that little voice in your head. You KNOW when you’re doing something right and you KNOW when you’re not. Experiment. Go with your gut feeling. And then bask in your own unique individual magickal and spiritual successes.
  • Does the cat have your tongue? When someone is spiritually bullying you into doing something the way they do, whether it’s using particular ingredients for something, or stones, or crystals, or looking at a certain tarot card in their way… Speak Up! Be firm if you have to. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion and stick to your guns!
  • Stop automatically accepting the information you’re reading in all the books and websites out there and start doing some experimenting on your own. Nothing bad is going to happen. You’re not really going to turn your neighbor into a frog, or cause the world to stop spinning. People who warn you against your own individualistic spiritual practices are either insecure themselves and afraid to peer outside the box, or they like the feeling of superiority it’s giving them when they tell you how something should be done.

The next time someone has the ballsy audacity to tell you you’re doing it wrong, how are you going to respond?

Tarot Meditations ~ Find Your Message Here

Posted here on 7-10-2020
Deck:  Rider/Waite

This is what journaling triplicates looks like.  This represents a pleasant morning at the kitchen table with my tarot deck, a notebook and pen, and a pot of fresh coffee.  If I have the time, I'll continue pulling cards in these sets of three until they stop talking to me. And just so you know, these are actual journal entries from my personal tarot journal, and they were written in August of 2011.

Since tarot is timeless, and yes, it really is, there may be some readers today who receive a profound message here for themselves.

  • 1. 3/wands, Temperance, 2/wands: Someone is apparently having quite a time keeping a balance in their lives where partnerships are concerned. I feel that business/financial partnerships are highlighted, but that is not the only kind of partnership portrayed here. Get a grip, a handle, on all these connections. Sort them out, nix the ones that are not beneficial to you, and nurture the ones that you wish to keep.

  • 2. 3/cups, Page/pentacles, 9/swords: You seem to be stressing over an occasion or get-together, possibly a celebration of some kind. Where is all the stress coming from? This appears to be a happy occasion, but that’s not going to be what it feels like if you don’t straighten out the issues that are making it stressful.

  • 3. The Moon, 4/cups, The Chariot: Oh, boy. Someone is lying to themselves about an issue that they’d rather not acknowledge or deal with, and this is going to get them no where fast. The truth might be unpleasant to face, but isn’t living with the false impression almost worse? Buck up and get it over with. Life will feel better afterwards, really.

  • 4. Ace/cups, King/wands, Knight/swords: You’re still living in the past, hanging onto the memories of a relationship that no longer exists. The future isn’t going to be much brighter when you run into this sword– brace yourself for bad news, really bad news; but as bad it is, it may not come as a surprise. I suspect that you’re expecting it. Best piece of advice to you– stop nurturing your delusions.

  • 5. Judgment, Page/wands, The Lovers: You tend to judge others so harshly that it interferes with the normal flow of relationships in your life. My advice to you– lighten up. No one is perfect, including yourself, but until you realize this, you will inadvertently keep sabotaging your connections to people in your life.

  • 6. 10/cups, 4/swords, Wheel of Fortune: A happy family is wonderful, until it becomes suffocating. Everyone needs a time-out once in a while, no matter how much they love each other, or how close they feel they are. The individual needs room to breathe and grow, to create and cultivate…new ideas, plans, goals, decisions. Something is coming full circle, be prepared for changes afoot.

  • 7. 10/pentacles, Knight/wands, Queen/swords: There’s a woman involved in your life in some way who’s in a position of authority, and this woman has control of money/financial issues. If this is work related, and I feel it may be, your best bet would be not to tick her off. There’s a pecking order in this situation, and you’d do well to learn your place in it.

  • 8. The Devil, The Hermit, The Hanged Man: Wow, this is a major pity party fed by your own demons and your dogged stubborn nature. It’s time to stop feeling sorry for yourself, get a grip on those things that have dominion over you, and grow a spine. Yes, people might feel sorry for you at the moment, but how long do you think you can keep this up?

  • 9. Ace/swords, 8/pentacles, 9/wands: Someone on the job is feeling a little defensive lately. You might have reason too, you might not; but either way, allowing others to see your true feelings is not going to help your cause in this situation. Best thing to do is keep your head down, don’t confide in anyone– that’s ANYONE– at work, and keep doing your job to the best of your ability.

  • 10. Ace/pentacles, King/pentacles, Strength: Someone from the grave is still trying to run the show, probably through surviving family members, legalities, and pure stubbornness that persists even in the spirit world. Grit your teeth and stand your ground. The heirs don’t have his finesse, they won’t be able to pull off half the shit this King used to get away with when he was alive.

  • 11. 9/cups, 8/wands, 3/pentacles: You’re waiting for news about a job. It’s coming, and it’s coming very soon. Relax, you’ll get what you wish for…thing is, be careful what you wish for.

  • 12. High Priestess, Ace/wands, The Sun: Someone is beginning a new venture, possibly business related. The thing is– listen to your gut instincts on this, including impressions of people you may be hooking up with for this venture. Whether it turns out to be a happy ending or not will depend upon how much you trust yourself and your own ability to make decisions.

  • 13. 6/pentacles, Queen/pentacles, Justice: Your money situation right now isn’t fair and there is no justice in it. But, big ‘but’ here, how much of this did you bring on yourself with poor decisions and an inability to curb your tendency to spend? I hate to say this, but I know you, and you’ve kind of dug your own grave when it comes to this predicament. Now you’re going to have to work to dig your way out.

  • 14. 5/pentacles, 2/swords, Page/pentacles: T., you may have bit off more than you could chew financially and now it’s coming back to bite you in the ass. You’re faced with a lot of decisions because of this, and you’re going to have to sit down and come up with a game plan to keep your head above water and stay one step ahead of creditors. Times are tight– don’t beat yourself up. You couldn’t have seen this coming.

  • 15. 5/wands, 7/pentacles, The Magician: There’s a bickering squabbling group out there all wrapped up in a disagreement over money, might be quite a nice little wad of money, too. Who’s going to come out ahead?…the individual who’s not afraid to wield a little power.

  • 16. The Star, 10/wands, 7/cups: Yes, life is tough right now, but it doesn’t have to be. Whenever you learn to break bad patterns, both from this life and past-lives, and start making better decisions you’ll find light at the end of the tunnel– surprise, surprise.

  • 17. 4/pentacles, The World, 5/cups: Your stubborn miserly attitude is going to come full circle, and you’ll regret it. The thing you find most important, that you’re working so hard to hang onto, is the very thing you’re going to drive away if you don’t straighten up and loosen up– both with your money and your emotions.

  • 18. 9/pentacles, 6/wands, 7/swords: There’s a lady who feels she’s won it all, her heart’s desire. Truth is, she hasn’t won anything. The people around her are leading her on, stealing her blind, taking advantage of her in numerous ways, both financially and emotionally. Don’t be so easily played. Are you really so naïve that you have to believe everything everyone tells you? Time to grow up and take off the rose colored glasses– fast!– before you lose everything, including your dignity.

  • 19. Knight/cups, The Empress, 3/swords: If you’re thinking about having an affair, think again. The swords that pierce the heart on this card can just as easily strike you. If you have this affair, you are most likely going to produce a child– are you ready for this responsibility? Are you ready to face family members with the results of your poor choices?

  • 20. 5/swords, 9/cups, 4/wands: Nope, you’re not going to pull off this plan, and you might as well pack up the balloons and cancel the caterer. Something is amiss here and it has to be straightened out before the decision is made to go forward as planned, or to take a different path. Instead of a celebration on the horizon, there will be a period of deep thinking and introspection. That’s okay, this is where answers are found.

Herbs: The Magical Acorn

The Acorn:

Energies:  good luck, protection, wisdom, and personal power. A dried acorn is an excellent natural amulet for keeping a youthful appearance.

Technically, I’m not sure if the acorn counts as an “herb”, since it springs from the mighty Oak Tree.  However, I do know that it most definitely is full of magickal energy, and it is part of the sacred world of plants, so we’ll include it here. Just so you know, I have an entire glass container full of acorns for my own magickal use.

The lore:

  • The oak is a sacred tree to many cultures and spiritual practitioners, including the Druids. There is a Nordic tale of the great god Thor sheltering beneath a mighty oak tree during a storm. The goddess Diana is often depicted wearing a necklace of acorns. The Celts and Druids found the oak tree especially symbolic of the Samhain season. The tree is a symbol of the Horned God, Herne (or Cernunnos)
  • The acorn is considered the first sacred food of civilization. It’s symbolic of security and abundance, and it counteracts loneliness, illnesses, and pain. It’s energy aids in maintaining longevity, draws good luck, and preserves the illusion of youth.
  • You can identify your true love by labeling two acorn caps with your name and the name of your beloved. Float them in a bowl of water, if they drift together, you’ve made a successful match, if they float apart…so does your love.

Is this book for you? ~ Review for Green Witchcraft Grimoire

My long time colleague and friend, MsJulieCarol, just shared her thoughts about my new book:

And with lots of space to personalize it, you can take notes of your experiences and write your own spells and formulas. Your Daily Tarot Cards

Daily Tarot Cards ~
Deck: Enchanted Dreams
Cards: Perspective, 10/Wands, 2/Cups

For couples, at this time, you may not be on the same page and this may be causing added stress and a feeling of overwhelming emotion, a feeling of added weight or responsibility for one or both of you, as well as that uncomfortable unnerving feeling when you are "out of sync" with your loved one. Viewing your relationship, your daily life, and each other from different perspectives may also cause feelings of suspicion and a loss of trust, whether these feelings are founded in reality or not.

With all the added stress of daily life and its uncertainties during these unusual times, it would be best if both of you practice complete transparency. Until you're able to turn things around in life in general and regain a feeling of normalcy, it would behoove you to put your partner at ease with reassurance that difficult times and daily struggles are from external events and conditions, and are not stemming from your connection with each other.

PS ~ This is my first time using this new deck, which was gifted to me by a dear friend. I foresee many happy hours of tarot reading with Enchanted Dreams. How did I do?

Sweet Dreams Spell ~ Green Witchcraft Grimoire

One of the most popular spells is a spell to enhance your dreams and protect you from nightmares . That’s why I included this spell titled "Sweet Dreams Spell" in my new book Green Witchcraft Grimoire:

[excerpt] "Dreams have always fascinated human beings, and along with the fascination comes magical ways of controlling, filtering, or even producing and enhancing them. From the familiar dream catcher used to filter nightmares from positive dreams, to the more mystic use of ritualistic herbs, the means and ways to experience this mysterious inner world has never ceased to inspire us..."

There are tons more spells and exercises included throughout Green Witchcraft Grimoire, so if this one looks useful, take a moment to pre-order your copy on Amazon!
