New Photos: Broken Hearts Collection (the cover artist for "The Spiritual Feminist")

This is the Nebraska artist whose work is featured on the cover of my next book, "The Spiritual Feminist"!

Most people have no idea how much work it takes to get to this point-- the creation is one aspect of it, and then you have the presentation, and the publicity behind it to get your work out there. Included in this collection is the Apple Heart Sculpture featured on the cover of "The Spiritual Feminist".

Women are incredible! To traverse life we have to take on so many different personas and faces. But we do it, and we do it So Well! Discovering and honoring the warrior goddess within yourself does not mean that you have to sacrifice the soft, beautiful, uniquely feminine side of your nature-- both energies are in your power and control.

Confessions of a Pagan Mom~ Confession #5

Wow, there's no way I can top confession #4, so I would imagine that I'm going to have a difficult time getting over this hump (confession #5).  And actually, I'm kind of looking at these confessions in a different light-- instead of trying to come up with a Single Confession per post; I'm going to start grouping confessions by topic. (I thought this was rather clever, and I'm having a rather down day today, so allow me to revel in a very small amount of self-back patting.)

Confession #5...the topic:  Food

1.  When I was pregnant, I ate chocolate ice cream for breakfast regularly.
2.  I hate sea food-- icky creatures that I wouldn't even want to pick up in my bare hands, and you expect me to put them in mouth! Ack.
3.  I almost always eat dessert first. (Who doesn't?!)
4.  The past couple years I've taken to claiming that I can't cook, and then flubbing things up when I try.  My latest adventure with this charade was when I botched a box of Mac n' Cheese, and my 14-year-old daughter whipped up the next batch in a cheesy, saucy, creamy delicious touché.
5.  I will eat a whole can of black olives by myself.
6.  I will eat a whole can of black olives by myself, secretly, so I don't have to share. :)
7.  When my hubby is running out to the Quick Shop for his energy drinks and cigs, and he asks me if I want a candy-bar...I say "no", when I really mean "yes".
8.  When my kids were babies, and I was spoon feeding them Gerber's Chicken Noodle baby food, I would sneak a bite now and then...I loved the flavor!
9.  After I've actually cooked a meal, I can ignore the pots & pans for at least 3 days.
10.  Once in a rare while--...okay, then!-- whenever I think I can get away with it, I drink directly from the great big liter bottles of pop in the fridge. (There, are you happy?)

Cheers!

Confessions of a Pagan Mom~ Confession #4

This little blog series is turning out to be rather cathartic.  I'm having to reach waaaaay back, into my youth actually, before my time came to be a Pagan Mom.  After I became a Pagan Mom, I was way too busy with babies and toddlers, diapers and laundry, cooking and cleaning, and finally Home-Schooling to really do anything considered Confession-Worthy.

So this is a deep dark secret that I've carried for over a quarter of a century, 32 years to be exact. (I feel like I should have a drum roll here.)

When I was 25 ( a sweet young Thang'), I had an affair with my dentist.

He was 25 years older than me (actually 49, soon to be turning 50); and I realized at the time (smart young Thang' that I was), that his affair with me was sort of a panicked grasping at his own youth, an escape from the idea of his own mortality.  His mindset was that he could stay connected with his youth and virility and all that by having a relationship with me.  He could somehow stave off the dreaded 50th birthday.  He was a man going through a mid-life crisis.  I knew that when he finally turned 50, he would realize that the world was not going to end, that everything would be okay, that he could slide comfortably back into his everyday mundane life with his wife of umpteen years, and normality would return.

And it did.

I have never regretted this experience.  I never regretted the relationship because I went into it with my eyes wide open, knowing that this was a temporary connection, that there was no real future as far as a lasting relationship went.  And I was so young (and just beginning to explore the world), so I wasn't ready for that type of thing anyway.  This was an adventure!

I know, I know-- the morality of it all.  I'm sure there are lots of people who will be more than happy to point out the pitfalls of this situation, and they would actually be right.

I would NOT encourage women to begin a relationship with a married man-- ever!  First, because most women would not be able to go into it as honestly as I did, with no expectations and with such a realistic picture.  Most women would be setting themselves up to be hurt and to face incredible disappointment.

Ladies-- I learned several things during this short-lived adventure, and I'm going to share them with you now:

1.  There is no future with a married man-- no matter what he tells you-- he's living a fantasy through you.  He is not going to a) leave his wife, or b) risk his business and his livelihood.

2.  His wife is never the horrible, awful, asexual, ugly, dullard that most husbands tell other women she is.  When (and if) you ever meet her, you most likely will find a charming, lovely, hard-working, patient woman who's spent years putting up with this wayward husband because she honestly loves him.  They've spent a great share of their lives together, and they created a family that extends to children and even grandchildren.  This woman actually deserves a metal.

3.  If he cheats on one wife, what makes you think he won't cheat on the next one?  (Think about it.)

I have to admit that there were a couple perks I took away from this little adventure:

1.  My teeth were incredible during this period, absolutely gorgeous, they were Super-Model-Material.

2.  I still can't look at a dentist's chair without smiling.

Confessions of a Pagan Mom~ Confession #3

I just asked my 14-year-old daughter to help me think of a Confession #3.  I must have led a pretty mundane or boring life, because I'm actually having a hard time coming up with ten things to confess.  But my Emma came up with a good one.

She was standing across the table from me when I asked her to help me think of something for this post.  She thinks for a moment or two and says:

"You deal with herbs on an almost daily basis, and surprisingly, none of them are drugs."

Yep, Emma, that's your Mum! :)

10 Confessions of a Pagan Mom~ Confession #2

The year:  1986

I was making a "first meal" for my future husband, and I was nervous.  I was in my late 20s, and quite frankly cooking was not my forte.  I had decided on chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, and stuffing. I think I also had a dessert, but I don't remember what it was.

Anyway, the chicken was in the oven, the potatoes were boiling, and I was going to make the stuffing with a boxed stuffing mix.  I opened the box and removed the package containing the bread crumbs, taking the bag in both hands on either side of the seam and pulling...it didn't pull apart.  So I pulled harder...it still didn't come apart.  So I pulled as hard as I could.  The bag popped open violently and bread crumbs flew out of the bag like a geyser, showering me, and landing on the floor all around my feet.

Panic...panic...panic.

What should I do?

I quickly swept the bread crumbs up off the floor, threw them in the pot of boiling water, mixing up a fine and dandy batch of stuffing.  It looked great.

I served this to my unsuspecting guest.

10 Confessions of a Pagan Mom~ Confession #1

1.  My husband Joe is always teasing me about what he calls "TV Crushes", which would translate into Celebrity Crushes. And, by the way, these types of crushes are perfectly okay, they meet the Married-Lady-Code-of-Acceptable-Behavior.  So with that said, my first Pagan Mom Confession is:

I have a horrendous crush on Edward Norton.  I think he is absolutely the most charming, attractive, desirable, interesting, intelligent individual.  I appreciate the depth of thought he puts into just about everything, and the intensity with which he explains himself during an interview.  I love the sound of his voice; his eyes; the way he carries himself; his charm; and most of all-- his movies.  "The Illusionist" is quite possibly the most romantic movie ever made...Plus, I love period pieces, spiritism-- and the rage that surrounded it during the turn of the 19th century and early 20th century, and the authentic sets and wardrobe-- it rates a *10* a hundred times over.  Jessica Beal was no chopped liver here either-- she did an incredible job of being beautiful, believable, tragic, vulnerable, and incredibly appealing...We had to believe, with all our hearts, that Edward's character would go to the ends of the earth for her-- and he did.

Happy New Year~ 2015 Resolutions

When I got up on this New Year's Eve day and let the dog out, I was greeted with a blast of air so frigid it's brittle.  This will be the first New Year's Eve in over 7 years that I have not done tarot readings at Ameristar Casino (in Council Bluffs IA); so this will be the first time in forever that I will be home on this night with my husband and kids.

I am relieved to say good-by to 2014.  It's been a hell of a rough year for the entire world.  "It's not just me", I think, as I read over the FB postings of friends, family, and fans.  There was something funky about 2014, and it's time to jump the bridge and leave all those weird vibes and energies behind.

I've said, for weeks now, that I strongly believe 2015 is going to be an amazing year of incredible opportunities and adventures; doors are going to open and new experiences are going to unfold!

So...looking to the future, what does everyone wish for 2015?  What kind of New Year's resolutions are we formulating?

Here's a few suggestions to get you started:

Relationship Resolutions--

Be more understanding of my partner’s faults.
Have more/better sex.
Find happiness outside of my relationship.
Increase my gratitude for my partner.
Be a better listener.
Show more interest in my partner’s life, work and interests.
Institute a date night.

Health Resolutions--

Eat, but Don't Pig Out
Jump Outside the Box (Consider medicinal alternatives, like holistic methods)
Guard Against the Bone Thief (osteoporosis)
Move Center Stage (It's okay to put yourself first--take care of you!)

Financial Resolutions--

Know What You Want
Prioritize Your Debts
Open an IRA
Enroll in an Automatic Savings Plan
Close Unnecessary Accounts
Make Money Doing What You Love
Collect Your Change
Give Money (What you send out, comes back-- karma)
Begin Using Personal Finance Software
Read a Financial Book Each Month

The Witch's Diary: With Amythyst & Joe

Bristolwicks Live Chat, 12-26-2014..."Unconventional" and "Off the Cuff" are putting it mildly. This week I was joined in the kitchen during our live chat with my husband Joe. It was a slow day at the Outer Circle, but it was livened up by the antics at our house. This is a good "get acquainted" video.

Hey

I belong to the Old-Married-Lady Club. In spite of this fact, which I very prominently display on all and every internet site that might include interaction with strangers, I will receive messages from men who have apparently not bothered to read one iota of information about me, including the fact that I am not single, and I'm not available-- just ask my husband.

Anyway, as an old-married-lady I feel I can give bachelors (young and not so young) a fair word of worldly advice about communicating with women.  One very strange phenomena that I've noticed on a world-wide global level among men is a penchant for sending one-word messages to Females Who Catch Their Eye.  And that message is:

Hey

That's it, just "Hey".  No "Hello, you look so lovely, I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time to discuss poetry; books; the state of modern romance and courting; favorite movies; hobbies and past times; journey's; bucket lists; animals; families; children...etc."

Nope, nothing like that.  Just:

Hey

There is also no attempt to uncover any details about the Object of their message; and they apparently are not going to take the time to actually Read any of the information about this individual; but you'd think that they'd want to get to know the woman that they're contacting. You would think they'd realize this is a multi-dimensional human being with lots of layers to them, not just a still image on a computer screen.  So you'd think these men would ask questions like:  "What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy day; have you ever rode a horse; toilet paper-- over or under; your favorite-- drink, book, movie, etc.; your opinion on [fill in the blank]; what do you think about the world at large; global warming; the price of rice in China?

Nope, nothing even remotely like that.  Just:

Hey

Guys...this ain't gonna' work, but...hey.

Edit:  Okay, all you bachelors out there, get your mental muscles revved up, watch a few notoriously emotional and romantic chick-flicks (for inspiration), and go find your True Love.  Another Very-Big-Piece-Of-Advice I'm going to give you is read the "about" section of your target's page!  Do not waste your time and energy on women who are "married", "just here for networking" or "friends".

Remember, if you can't take 2 minutes of your time to really look at a woman's profile, she isn't going to take 2 minutes of her time to respond to your message.

 Good luck!

Success: How do you know when you've reached it?

1.  How do you measure success?

2.  Whose yardstick of measurement do you use?

4.  Does "success" boil down to nothing more than "satisfaction"?

5.  Why are some people satisfied with where they are in life, and other people are never satisfied?

6.  Is success a matter of ambition?...luck?...destiny?

7.  Is being successful linked with being competitive?

8.  Are most people who are "satisfied" with their lives considered "successful?  Why, or why not?

9.  Would this mean that people who are never "satisfied" with their lives and achievements are never "successful"?

10.  What makes you successful?

A Review:

"Part devotional, part grimoire and part empowerment manual, The Spiritual Feminist offers readers her-stories, anecdotes and correspondences for dozens of goddesses. A wise, accessible and often irreverent guide, author Amythyst Raine-Hatayama reveals the Goddess in us all, showing women of all ages how to honor, embody and invoke Her many facets. Once I began reading The Spiritual Feminist, I couldn’t stop. The feeling of understanding, and being understood, forged an intimate connection to the Goddess—riveting me to the page—stirring spiritual yearnings and opening new ways of seeing Her…almost as if for the first time."

An epitaph?...maybe, maybe not

My 1989 Suburban, The She-Sub, my infamous much-beloved vehicle, appears to be at the end of her life. Two or three weeks ago my daughters borrowed it to use in a moving-to-the-city-hauling-furniture-and-stuff venture. On the way home that night, it began leaking “something”, and it died. We had to make a middle-of-the-night dash to go get the vehicle (and my daughter), both sitting on the crest of a dark hill along the highway, to bring them home, towing the Suburban.

Last week my husband thought he figured out what was wrong with it, and we thought he had it fixed. But it was not to be. It's perplexing. At this point, we don't have a clue, and we can't afford to take her to the Doctor...ummm, I mean mechanic.

Joe is in the process of talking to individuals knowledgeable on the subject of mechanical automotive topics, and he's going to see if he can perform a miracle. He honestly thinks it's “fixable”; he just has to figure out what “it” is.

This story is a work-in-progress.

Stay tuned.

4) I'm letting the dog out.

5) I'm letting the dog in.

6) It's time for bed.

10) I'm writing.

1950s Propaganda...Little did my mother, grandmother,
& great-grandmother know that this was a Trap!

*Edit:  Look Fast!...I finally got the dishes caught up one evening and decided that I wanted proof.  Surprisingly, when I got up the next morning, the counter tops were still clear, there were just a few guilty little plates and cups in the sink.

I Am Not a Lot of Things

I am not an intellectual. I don't know why it's automatically assumed if someone likes to write that they are going to be incredibly intellectual and knowledgeable on all the hot topics of the politically correct present day.

I hate politics, of any kind. I'm the most non-political person that you're ever going to come across. I know, I know. I can already here the sighs and the wagging pointy fingers declaring that this is something I should be up on, something I should pay attention to, something I should be at least minimally involved in. (But I'm not.) It is the driest, most boring topic in the world, and I believe that the whole political system is akin to the public school system and parents: they want you to think that you have a say and some influence on a subject, but really-- you don't.

I love my spirituality and my magickal path, but I am not an expert on all the ancient and infinitely numerous pantheons, practices, or theologies. I'm not into the enthusiasm of people who want to historically dissect some tradition and then try to reconstruct it letter by letter, moment by moment, archaic rule by archaic rule, outdated practice by outdated practice. This is just too much detail for my weary little brain; and besides, this is not ancient times, and there will be better, more modern, more practical ways to practice an ancient path in the present day, a way that will build and expand spirituality and enhance our lives in the modern world.

I am not detail oriented. I hate reading long boring historical tomes on witchcraft, or the tarot, or anything actually. It makes me cringe when I turn to a page in any tarot book (including my 1st one) and read “...the tarot was used in Egypt 5000 years ago.” First, I'm not so sure that this is true, probably because I don't take the time to read all the numerous dry history books on the subject, the ones that probably contain a few facts and a multitude of theories. And honestly, this sounds awful, but I just don’t care. (I can hear a barely audible gasp.) Is this so awful? No, not really. Using one of my husband's favorite quotes: “It need not pertain.”...and it doesn't pertain, to me at least.

I've had a few rare occasions on a radio program where I was asked some incredibly detailed intellectual type question on a topic. I know that I have given them more than a few seconds of dead air time as I pause, thinking in blind panic-- Do they expect me to know this off the top of my head? Do they really expect me to carry on a long dialogue on this very complicated detailed intellectual academic topic? Are they kidding? Head's up peoples-- this is what Research Books are for.

(Apparently, I'm a Big Picture kinda' girl.)

I am not necessarily a good housekeeper. I was at one time. I use to think that housekeeping was an “Art”...and then I had 7 kids. Housework quickly became something I was too tired to do, something that had to be put on the back burner, behind laundry, and baby bathing, and story book reading, and grocery shopping, and breast feeding, and home schooling. And then later in life, after the kids were grown up, I discovered that there was a whole bunch of Important Things that I needed to be doing, like writing books, and other cool stuff, so then housework got pushed even further down the line. Do not get me wrong. I repeat, don't misunderstand me. I'm a Libra. I love my surroundings to be clean and beautiful and totally Zen. It's just that now-a-days, sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. And when they aren't, I know that they will be eventually.

I am not a seamstress.

I'm not necessarily a good cook, though my kids would tell you I am because they don't know any better.

I am not business oriented. Finances confuse me, and reading a tax document is like reading a foreign language.

I am not mechanical...hooking up the DVD machine is enough of a challenge for me, and there's only three options, all color coded-- red to red, white to white, yellow to yellow.

I am not always a good judge of character, and I'm empathic, you'd think I would be. I tend to be naive and trusting. I wouldn't lie and steal, or exaggerate; so I automatically assume no one else will either.

I'm not a good wife, at least I don't think I am. I'm like some crusty old bachelor who's set in his ways and gets all scowly if someone rearranges the pantry. I like my space, and I don't want someone else's fingerprints all over it.

I am not good at remembering things-- Lots of things! Some people might think I'm rude when I forget to answer their messages, but I have a good reason...I just forgot that you sent me one! I make lists all the time: notes to myself about things to do for the day, notes about writing projects, notes about phone calls, notes about Very-Important-Business-Emails that can't be ignored; notes about what to do the next day...ad infinitum.

I am not a party girl. (Libra likes peace and quiet.)

I am not a team player. (Think tarot card: The Hermit)

I am not a good gardener...I grow fond of all growing things, and some of the growing things in my garden I grow fond of turn out to be weeds, and I haven't got the heart to pull them out, or cut them down. Houseplants-- forget it. I have a black thumb with houseplants, and the smart ones commit suicide before I ever get them home to re-pot.

As you can see, I'm not a lot of things.
