Sneak Peek @ The Divine Me: Embracing Your Inner Goddess: "My Vulva, the horn; The Boat of Heaven"

Admittedly, I took a brief lull the past few days with the writing of my 10th book, but I am back at it now in full force.  We're up to 20,181 words and 105 pages.  Basically, each chapter is divided into two sections --  1) there's a section on the goddesses for each chapter that includes the story behind her along with more insights, rituals, and ways to connect with her energy (the goddess and the heavenly bodies; the goddess in every day; the goddess in every month; the elemental connection; the goddess in YOU); 2) and then there's a very personal section with each chapter titled "Facing the Mirror" (what is your greatest strength; what about the darker side of your nature; how do you connect with yourself; how do you connect with your spiritual side; how do you connect with the physical you).

This is a first sneak peek at the contents, with a look at the goddess I chose to highlight for the month of January... Inanna.

____________________

Origin: Sumerian
Influences: love, war, beauty, sex, justice, political power
AKA: Queen of Heaven, Ishtar
Planet: Venus
Symbols: lion, 8-point star

I was somewhat amazed, and more than a little taken aback, when I looked into the myths and stories surrounding Inanna. She’s rather daunting actually. She’s a goddess obsessed with gaining power and unwilling to face the consequences for her actions. It’s also said that she’s promiscuous, vicious, and can even be cruel.

One legend goes that she deliberately gets her father, Anu, drunk so that she can steal from him the figurative concepts of wisdom and culture while he’s passed out.

The story of her courtship with a young shepherd, Demuzi, was filled with great draughts of romantic verbiage, especially about “plowing her vulva” and who was going to do this and how it must be done:

My vulva, the horn,
The Boat of Heaven

Is full of eagerness like the young moon.
My untilled land lies fallow

She goes on to marry Dumuzi, the shepherd boy, and he happily wallows on the consort’s throne, drinking in and soaking up all the riches and treasure of the royal lifestyle that she, Inanna, had built, and plowing her vulva, I would imagine.

Then her sister’s husband dies, and she decides to journey to the underworld, where her sister Ereshkigal rules. After she makes this journey, she becomes trapped in the underworld, and she’s told that the only way she can leave and return to the world of the living is if she finds someone to take her place.

During her imposed confinement in the underworld, Inanna was able to see the world of the living she left behind and how her absence affected those close to her. To her surprise, and probably dismay, she saw that her husband Dumuzi had not mourned her at all but had gladly taken over the reins of the throne and was soaking up the glory of his new position.

“Him”, she told her captors. “I give you Dumuzi to take my place.” And so, it was. Inanna returned to the world of the living.

Understandably, she was upset with her husband, who apparently was more interested in the material things and powerful position that his marriage to Inanna provided him, rather than the love and adoration of his wife. And I think, with that sentence, I have just stumbled upon the moral of this story, which serves as fair warning for other prospective unscrupulous mates who are looking for something other than love.

I think Inanna made the right decision. “Burn in hell… er, Hel, Dumuzi.”

Contracted Work for the Writer ~ this is how it's done

I am very pleased with how all of my books are doing, how they've been received, and most of the reviews and endorsements that have come in for them.  I do notice that I can tell which books were published by publishing companies and which books were published independently by me through Amazon, because I don't have access to a publicity team, so it's much harder to gather reviews, and these books just don't get the same exposure that the other books get.

I've been quite amused at some of the comments that have come in for a couple of these books: Green Witchcraft Grimoire: A Practical Resource for Making Your Own Spells, Rituals, & Recipes and The Essential Guide to Wicca for Beginners.  These books were contracted work.  This means that I was approached by a publishing company that already had an outline for a book, a very specific outline, down to the word count for each section, and I was offered this project for contract.  Once I accepted this project, the contract was received and signed, and it's very clear what's expected from you and when.

This type of work is very hard and fast.  It's on a very tight schedule and it's a marathon writing project.  This also includes a rigid publicity schedule for the author 4 to 6 weeks before the book is released and four to six weeks after its release.  This schedule, an actual schedule, comes with pre-planned release posts that are either a "fill in your book title", or suggestions for what they want done that day, such as "make a video", or "do an author-copies received" post, etc.  You get the picture.  This publicity work is all included in your contract and it comprises part of the work you do for the pay that you receive.

The contents for each section of the book are created entirely by the author who was contracted for the work.  There's also a lot of editing done with your editor, a couple zoom or skype meetings, a couple telephone conferences, and a back and forth editing process with our beloved Microsoft Word.  It's a process, and it's a meticulous process.  The company wants this book to be as pristine as possible for it's world debut.

  • All in all, I enjoyed my experience, and the paycheck for this type of work is excellent, although the author does not retain rights to the manuscript.  Once you write this contracted book and send it off for production, it is no longer your property and you will not receive any royalties from future sales.  It's a one-time payment for your work deal.
  • If you don't like to work under pressure, or under deadlines, you may not like this kind of experience.  It was grueling at times, but it also taught me that I can get a LOT more done than I thought I could.
  • Also, with contracted work, the publishing company doesn't act as most employers do, where they withhold taxes for you and all that usual good stuff that goes with the business end of a paycheck.  You are responsible for paying the taxes on the money received for this work, and it can be substantial, depending on your perspective and your project.  This was a big drawback for me.  The year I had to claim this work, the taxes were paid on this income by the government simply claiming my $1400.00 stimulus check.  Which sucked, but at least it was paid.

What I found amusing was a couple of quirky reviewers that didn't like some of the spells included in these books: "I'll bet she just wrote these spells up and never tried them out."... Well, ya, some of these spells I did just that using my own spiritual practices and experience, and with a deadline for the material snapping at my heels.  But there were a lot of spells that I have personally worked and these spells and rituals were included in these books as well. (Coming from 40-some years experience)  There's probably over a hundred+ spells and rituals between these two books.

The only aspect of this type of work that I had negative feelings for were:

1) coming up with 40 or 50 people for potential reviews and endorsements, including emails, and this was a required task... this just didn't seem like my job.  I felt like I was doing someone else's job for them.  I don't know if this is standard procedure, and I suppose it might be, but coming up with those names was very stressful, and then publishing a second book the same year, well, you can only ask so much of people.  I didn't' want to contact the same people twice.  And it might not seem like it, with all of the social media pages I have up, blogs and websites, YouTube channels, etc., but I'm actually a very reclusive introverted person in real life.  I don't interact with more than a small handful of people on the internet, so this task was much harder for me than what you may think.

2) also, I didn't like a new stipulation coming up in the process, where I was asked to make screen shots of the stats for my websites and blogs, giving a report on my traffic, etc.  I thought this was slightly bizarre and way out of line.  And no, I didn't do this, I passed on the project I was being offered.  This was too invasive for me, considering I'd already published two books with this company.  This also did not feel like my job, it's my opinion that there's a sales analyst or someone else out there who should be doing this stuff.

Anyway, for writers out there, either published authors or those who are still working towards this goal, here you have it.  This is one way to get published and to support yourself as a writer at the same time.

A New Book ~ a work-in-progress

Since I'm over 13,000 words and 69 pages into a project, I suppose it would be a good time to announce that there is a new book in the works. And because I still haven't decided how I'm going to publish this book, whether with Amazon's KDP program, or with a standard publishing company, I should call the title and cover a "working title and cover". The book... "The Divine Me, Embracing Your Inner Goddess". There are portions of this book that are highly personal, but then, getting to know and embrace the goddess within means getting to know and embrace yourself and everything that goes with you. I'm using myself as an example. So, beware world.

The Three's ~ To Work, To Suffer, To Compromise, To Celebrate

The 3s ~ perseverance

To work, to suffer, to compromise, to celebrate

Pentacles ~ Embracing a healthy work ethic while centering our lives around goals and accomplishments.

Employment, work, expertise, cooperation, practice, growth, interaction, concentration, single-mindedness

3/Pentacles ~

This card is connected to our work, our employment, our career. But it goes so much deeper. The three of pentacles is connected to our identity. We spend an enormous amount of our time working to earn our livelihood, and what we spend all of this time doing integrates itself into who we are. It doesn’t matter if you’ve spent years studying to practice a highly specific and specialized job, or you flip burgers at McDonald’s… What you do is part of who you are. It can touch all other aspects of your life in a multitude of ways.

Never dismiss this card as simple and straightforward, always look beneath the surface, into the hows and whys.

Reversed:

Something is not “working” in your life. Examine all areas of your life because cogs and wheels have ground to a halt, usually along with purpose and motivation.

My Personal Connection:

This card connects with me, as it might with so many of you, who have known since very early in life what it is you’re suppose to do, exactly what your job should be. But, like me, I’m betting that there are a lot you who took a life time trying to figure out exactly how you were going to do this life’s work, this mysterious calling. With me, it was writing. I began sending out short stories and essays to magazines when I was a teenager, and suffered the humiliation and puzzlement over having them returned, often with a form letter of rejection, but once from a national woman's magazine of the day, a heartfelt letter from an editor encouraging me to continue writing and to give it some time and plenty of work. I still think of this unknown person every once in a while.

I didn’t publish my first book until I was in my 50s. Up until then, in my 30s the only thing published was a handful of fictional stories to literary magazines for a small token of payment. I still have the very first $5.00 check I received from one of these magazines. I kept it. It was visible validation that this can be done!

I have finally found peace with the three of pentacles, though I tend to keep a wary eye on it.

Swords ~ Embracing sorrow and grief at their base level with the purpose of growth and renewal.

Sorrow, broken heart, sadness, depression, infidelity, underhandedness, affair, heart problems

3/Swords ~

This card wreaks of sorrow, all the heartbreak that can be experienced in a single lifetime. It cries, it wails, it pulsates with pain. It often represents the human condition at its most vulnerable. The three of swords is such a dramatic gripping card, you can almost feel a palpable pain in your chest when you look upon it.

The three of swords severs with the thrust of those three swords. It severs relationships, and it severs hope. It lays us before the world with open raw emotions, our most intimate tender parts exposed.

Reversed:

Climb up out of your sorrow. Failure to do so will result in the burial of all future plans, hopes, dreams, and possibilities. Turn around… turn around now, before it’s too late.

Resign yourself to the fact that there may be something you have to cut out of your life, something that may at first appear to be pivotal to your existence and your happiness.

My Personal Connection:

Anyone who has ever lived has experienced sorrow at some point, whether this is in the guise of broken relationships, the death of loved ones, both human and animal; or the death of dreams, fantasies, and other impossible and sometimes intangible things in our life.

One of the main lessons I’ve received from this card is that you have to pick yourself back up, lick your wounds, and continue moving forward. To do anything else would be unthinkable.

Wands ~ Embracing the gift of successful negotiations and arbitration.

Compatibility, third-party, arbitration, patience, understanding, business, contracts, agreements, polyamory, open relationships

3/Wands ~

The patience of a saint is the energy that exudes from this card, a perennial sense of waiting, of accepting, of compromising, of arbitrating. This card takes you through the trials and tribulations of life with quiet grace and dignity. There will be no outbursts, no storms, no drama, and no ultimatums. Final outcomes will be reached with an uncanny emotionless anti-climactic ending.

“All good things come to those who wait.” Sometimes quiet persistence and patience will speed us along to positive and desired outcomes. There’s so many lessons to be learned here. Study the surrounding situations and characters with a discerning eye and a quiet tongue.

Reversed:

There’s a fox in the chicken coop. Be careful who you trust. While sitting at the table of negotiation, take a peek underneath to see who’s holding hands.

My Personal Connection:

The figure on this card seems to have an endless amount of patience and endurance. Not all of us are so well endowed. My life is an endless period of impatient episodes of waiting for something… waiting for Santa to deliver my first green two-wheeled bike. I knew it was coming months ahead of time, which was rather torturous, and if the adults around me had seriously reflected on their decision to let me know so far ahead of time, they may have changed their minds. I was 6 years old, and almost every day for weeks and weeks before Christmas, I would get dressed and run all around the outskirts of the huge old Victorian farmhouse to see if this bike might have been left early, honestly thinking I would find it leaning against a corner of the house in the yard.

Waiting, always waiting… waiting to start school, waiting to finish school; waiting to start dating; waiting for an engagement ring; waiting to get married; waiting to get divorced; waiting for a baby to be born; waiting for a job to start; waiting for a book to be done; waiting for someone’s birthday; waiting for an anniversary; waiting for winter to be through, waiting for spring to start; waiting for Friday; waiting for magick to happen.

Always waiting. For me this is the epitome of this tarot card, and I can hear it breathe a deep tired sigh.

Cups ~ Embracing joy and celebration with a light heart and pure conscience.

Milestone, wedding, anniversary, birth, celebration, frivolity, party, revelry, drunkenness, hedonism

3/Cups ~

Joviality and camaraderie are hailed with the three of cups, but it’s more than just a rousing party. The most important aspect of this card is the What, the Who, and the Why. It’s the reason for this celebration, this gathering, that’s important. It may herald a pivotal milestone in someone’s life. The appearance of the three of cups may be the needed encouragement someone has to have in order to work out a relationship, or keep working towards an important goal.

Life is laced with potholes, and detours, and the possibility of failure breathing down our neck, but this card thumbs its nose at all of them, whispering in our ear… You can – You Can – YOU CAN!

Reversed:

The party is over. The pub has closed. The last glass has been washed. The music has stopped, the crowd has dispersed, and silence has descended. Sometimes we have difficulty coming back down to earth from the emotional high of celebrations. Sometimes everyday mundane life pales in comparison to these milestone moments and the exalted experience of profound success and happiness.

Embrace the normal mundane everyday life between the peaks. There’s so much to learn and experience in the valleys.

My Personal Connection:

At the time I’m writing this, I’ve lived for 60 years. I am amazed, looking back, at the number of celebrations and milestones this card represents. The birth of a baby, a graduation, a personal accomplishment, but also other people’s milestones and celebrations that have touched my life profoundly, especially events connected to my children.

In my 20s I may have misunderstood the three of cups, thinking this was the kind of energy that we should be able to maintain most of the time. This idea will send you on a rampaging streak to find, cling to, and ride this wave of ridiculously high energy, and you might feel that you are failing in some way if you’re unable to do so. But the thing is, it’s physically and emotionally impossible to be hysterically ceremoniously on top of the world for extended periods. Even if you were capable of being this deliriously on top the majority of the time, it would then become the mundane and the regular, it would lose it’s special effect. It would lose the magic.

I wish the younger me would have realized this sooner and actually savored the more quiet times, even if they seemed boring, or tedious, or painfully anti-climactic. The lesson of this card is to appreciate the darker days, the shadows, and the periods of quiet introspection. It will make the sunny days more brilliant and memorable.

The Spiritual Feminist by Amythyst Raine helps connect us to the Goddesses and shows us how to invoke their energy. We are introduced to forty-five Goddesses and shown ways to embrace each one through charities and other causes. We are also given a correspondence of herbs, animals, colors, and planetary influences. We are shown a woman’s life through the elements. We are also shown the Goddess in tarot and also the wisdom of wise-women. We are given correspondences for working rituals and magick. This book is filled with wisdom about the Goddesses and women and their connection to her. I would recommend this book to any woman who wants to get in touch with the Goddess and learn more about herself as a woman. ~ Lovetoread

There is much wisdom and enchantment to be found in The Spiritual Feminist. The amount of information revealed will be welcomed by anyone wanting to travel along the Goddess Path. Amythyst Raine has poured her heart and soul into this charming book and I hope to read more from this wisdom-filled author. I sense this will make a remarkable companion book to Naming the Goddess and many other volumes on Goddess Spirituality. ~ Vivienne Moss

I recommend this book to women everywhere who desire to get more in touch with their femininity and power or who feel estranged from the world of women for whatever reason. I am so glad that Goddess is back and that she is such a rollicking powerhouse! ~ Landis Vance, spiritmountainwilds.com

“An overview of the woman/Goddess life through the seasons encourages us to find the Goddess within via poetically described rituals and energy work. There are also quite a few recipes to try from the author’s kitchen!… All in all, this is a very good informative read.” ~ Maja Todorovic at Eternal Haunted Summer, http://eternalhauntedsummer.com/issues/summer-solstice-2015/the-spiritual-feminist/

Part devotional, part grimoire and part empowerment manual, The Spiritual Feminist offers readers her-stories, anecdotes and correspondences for dozens of goddesses. A wise, accessible and often irreverent guide, author Amythyst Raine reveals the Goddess in us all, showing women of all ages how to honor, embody and invoke Her many facets. Once I began reading The Spiritual Feminist, I couldn’t stop. The feeling of understanding, and being understood, forged an intimate connection to the Goddess—riveting me to the page—stirring spiritual yearnings and opening new ways of seeing Her…almost as if for the first time. ~ Janet Boyer, Amazon.com Hall of Fame Reviewer, PaganSquare Sacred Symbols blogger and author of Back in Time Tarot, Naked Tarot and other titles

I’m not sure if you know or not but in September I had a heart attack and open heart surgery, and with the recovery process, I became a little depressed. Your book came to me at the perfect time, because reading it really lifted my spirits and gave me back my womanhood. The Information on the Goddesses of different belief systems is very interesting, and the personal life experiences, with the added touch of your “Craft”, makes this book very inspiring for women. ~ Melita Kim Foster-Yates Truitt (Mystikal Melita) owner of Witchy Wisdom Network, witchywisdom.ning.com

Reconnect With Your Pagan Roots & the Mother Goddess

Reconnect with your pagan roots and the Mother Goddess through my book, The Spiritual Feminist (Moon Books, John Hunt Publishing).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UMARTQG/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i4

An excerpt:

Hecate
Her Story:

Hecate is one of the triple goddesses, often depicted in art as a single body with three heads. She is the goddess of witchcraft; the moon; the spirit realm; nature and night visions; considered protectress of the Witches. She also protects women in childbirth, is the guardian of the spirit world, and “Queen of the Crossroads”– a place of dark magic, spiritual wisdom, and terrible power.
____________________

The moon’s shadow fell as a pattern on the dirt road beneath the trees. The young woman’s cloak hid her face as she leaned on her knees to dig a small hole, depositing a knotted scarf holding herbs and stones, a tiny carved image, and her menstrual blood. Her lips moved silently as she invoked the presence of Hecate.

As the young woman covered her sacred bundle with earth and rose from her knees, the sound of a hound baying at the moon echoed in the distance. The breeze picked up, moving the tree limbs above, shifting the shadows on the road into eerie patterns. A chill ran up the woman’s spine, and she gathered her cloak more tightly about her shoulders, shivering with the knowledge that the great goddess Hecate was moving through the crossroads.

Embracing the Goddess:
Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. So often women are under the impression that someone else is responsible for their protection, but this isn’t true. We’re responsible for protecting ourselves, and sometimes this can mean making difficult decisions.

Hecate’s correspondences:

Herbs: garlic, lavender, honey
Animal: dog
Color: purple
Planet: Jupiter
Day: Thursday
Element: Earth
Feminine Face: Crone
Symbols: a torch; a dagger; the crossroads;
the moon; the serpent; fire

Invoke this goddess in the sacred darkness of night, at a crossroads, which is her favored realm, in the light of a fire. The presence of a dog is desirable, and this creature will not only be pleasing to Hecate, but may very well announce her beautiful and terrible presence before you are aware of it.

Tarot for Grownups ~ Another sales milestone!

Good morning, World! I’m delighted to announce that my book, Tarot for Grownups, has reached another sales milestone this month. Yay! and Happy Dance!

If you haven’t already purchased a copy, you can follow the links provided here.  This book is written for adults, so expect a healthy dose of sarcasm, some explicit language now and then, adult topics, and a healthy dose of realism when it comes to the interpretations, as well as the personality profiles for the court cards.  There’s not a fluffy bunny to be found here, and I concentrate on the nitty-gritty of life.  We have plenty of tarot books out there shrouded in rose colored glasses, fairies, the white light, and fantasy.  This is definitely not the case with Tarot for Grownups.

More Book-Hoopla (Yes! I Must)

http://ladyamythyst.com

Okay, it’s been over a month now since the release of my 4th book (The Spiritual Feminist) and most of the initial hoopla has died down– but there might be one or two tricks I’m pulling out of my hat in the next few weeks/months, we’ll see, and I want to surprise you. (And I can hang on to some pretty big surprises, as you might know if you’ve kept up with my blogs.)

Here’s the deal–

To all Amazon Readers ~ I would be delighted, I owe-you-my-firstborn-child grateful if you would kindly leave a review of this book, or at least give it a star rating with a sentence or two about why you, personally, liked the book. Just like ear-rings, you can never have too many positive reviews!

To all of my readers ~ I would be absolutely I owe-you-a-winning-lottery-ticket grateful to anyone who’s read the book and enjoyed it if you would PASS IT ON to another reader. Either lend them your copy, or send them a link to buy their own, seriously, this is how a book’s popularity grows, through you, THE READERS, and word-of-mouth.

To radio hosts ~ I’m not finished talking about “The Spiritual Feminist”; and I will NEVER be finished discussing goddess spirituality, paganism, witchcraft, or feminism…ever. If you’d like to schedule an interview, email me ( witch_of_endore@yahoo.com ), or FB private message me.

With all that said, it’s been a hell-of-a-spring! Thank you to everyone who has assailed me with congratulations; thank you to everyone who has purchased the book; thank you to reviewers and radio hosts for all the terrific reviews and memorable shows!

Book Launch Party!~ Hooza!!

Thank you to Moon Books, and John Hunt Publishing;
and thank you to my awesome publicist Nimue Brown!

I posted a while ago on Facebook about the Book Launch Party tonight for The Spiritual Feminist.  I’m looking forward this evening to fun with family and friends– some picture taking for my publicist!– and good food and drink.  Thank you to my daughter, Anne, who had a special cake made for the evening– it’s designed after the Book of Shadows in the movie Practical Magic (and I’ll bet this is a first for the ladies here at Hy-Vee’s Bakery in Fremont NE!)

Thank you to John Hunt Publishing, and Moon Books, and my awesome publicist Nimue Brown!

Happy Sunday, everyone!!
